2011 Roads Technical Workshop

The 2011 session of the Roads Technical Workshop was held on Tuesday, February 8th and Wednesday, February 9th at the Nantes International Exhibition Centre. Both the venue (Palace of the Brittany Duchy) and date (the day after the international music event known as Nantes' "", or "Crazy Day", whose theme this year was entitled "") have remained unchanged for nearly the 22 years since this event was created by LCPC. Nonetheless, the 2011 gathering featured two major innovations:

  • LCPC's "disappearance" as of January 1st, 2011 and subsequent "rebirth" following the merger with INRETS in the form of IFSTTAR (French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks);
  • The decision from this point forward to organise the Roads Workshop event under the aegis of IDRRIM (Institute for Roads, Streets and Transport Infrastructure, founded at the beginning of 2010), of which IFSTTAR is a founding member.

The concept and overall format of the Roads Plenary programme, which have been consolidated over the past few years, remained unchanged for the 2011 event. All actors, whether they be project owners, operators, design offices, industry executives or researchers, have made these sessions a fixture on their calendar, for discussing the design, construction, maintenance and operations of linear land transport infrastructure (although the proportion of the agenda devoted to road transport has remained predominant).

The 2011 programme raised some issues associated with recycling, as well as the environmental and health-related impacts of construction work and the road safety audit protocol, all of which lie at the heart of concerns expressed by national political and technical authorities. Session participation was as strong as in 2010 (350 attendees): IDRRIM and IFSTTAR extended an invitation to the audience for next year's Roads workshop, to be held on February 7th and 8th, 2012.
